Brazilian Earth System Scientist with a PhD in Meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-USA). He has dedicated his scientific career primarily to the Amazon and climate science, working at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). He chaired the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in the Amazon (LBA) and was also a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), contributing as one of the authors of the IPCC AR4, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He has served as National Secretary for Research and Development Policies at the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Brazil, and as President of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). He is a foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society, and serves as Co-chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon.
